You are looking at rare work of tribal art with humble origins. These kilims, known as Balouch gelim-farsh, were woven by female tribal nomads in the area of Quchan (aka Quchon and Kuchan) of northern Khorasan province in NE Iran, to be used as khorjuns, cushions and tent floor covering. Created on simple horizontal wooden looms, gelim-farsh includes patches of knotted pile using a form of weave called neem-lool. These kilims are no longer made and each is at least 50 years old; some probably as old as 80, although these are just estimates. “You could search all over Iran and not find 100 of these anymore,” says a Tehran dealer.

A khorjun is a double-saddle or a donkey bag. Goods are loaded in two giant pockets and balanced over the back of the animal. The khorjuns on this web site, of course, have been cut open to be used as decorative flat-woven rugs with powerful imagery, with subdued colors that fit most existing decors. Of course, they have been extensively washed and sun-dried to eradicate any of the smell and dust of their humble beginnings.
